The history of the Potomac Valley Shetland Sheepdog Club, Inc. is one of "grass roots" development. The Club originated with a small group of Sheltie owners with varying exposure to the breed but an interest in self-improvement and the breed's welfare. This heritage is now a characteristic of the club. PVSSC has greatly increased the educational and competitive opportunities available to area Sheltie fanciers.
1971
Club founded in late 1971 by a small group of Sheltie owners with varying exposure to the breed but a shared interest in self-improvement and the welfare of the Shetland Sheepdog. Meetings were initially held in members' homes.
1972
Meeting times and places were regularized, a public meeting place was selected, and in June 1972 the first formal election of officers was held.
1973
Application made to the American Kennel Club for recognition, resulting in approval of the Club's name, development of an AKC model Constitution and By-laws, and designation of the Metropolitan Washington DC area as the Club's primary area of operation.
1975
The Club's first AKC-sanctioned match was held in February 1975.
Growth
Membership grew from a small group of fanciers to include nationally known "Sheltie people," locally active breeder-exhibitors, performance enthusiasts, and pet owners. Members have written articles and served as editors for national breed publications.
Today
PVSSC holds its annual Specialty Shows, Obedience/Rally Trials, and Herding Trials. Club programs continue to bring some of the breed's most prominent people to the Washington area to share their expertise.

Charlotte Rose was an outstanding English-bred Sheltie that Sandy and Mac acquired from Landover Kennels in Abercorn, Wales. She has an outstanding pedigree and did quite well in her brief show career in England. She was a couple of years old when Sandy and Mac acquired her from Landover and brought her back to the States with them. Charlotte completed her Companion Dog title in 1992, and several of her offspring also competed in the obedience ring, likewise earning titles. Her impeccable structure, flowing sable coat, and gentle temperament embodied everything we love about the breed. Charlotte Rose was an extraordinary Sheltie and will always be remembered as a most endearing and loved companion.

Birdie's story is one of love — she came to NVSR after her devoted owner became seriously ill. It's clear she was cherished, and she's ready to bring that same love into a new home. This sweet girl is the best of both worlds: active and playful outside, calm and easygoing inside. She's fully house-trained, has excellent manners, and can be trusted when left alone.
Birdie enjoys the company of other dogs, loves to cuddle, and will happily sit by your side after a day of fun. She rides quietly in the car and already knows basic commands. With a little leash practice and continued guidance, she's only going to shine brighter.
